So, I had never tasted frozen hot chocolate until the other day. A family member made some and I tried it. Can I just say WOW! Frozen hot chocolate is absolutely delicious! I can't believe I have waited so long to taste it. To top it off, frozen hot chocolate is so easy to make from scratch. What is Frozen Hot Chocolate?
Truthfully, before I tasted frozen hot chocolate I thought of the term as sort of an oxymoron. Really - how can you call hot chocolate frozen? So I was skeptical. Sure people have raved about it, but to me frozen hot chocolate is basically a chocolate shake. But I was oh so wrong!
Frozen hot chocolate has been a favorite at Serendipity for over a half a century, and they have closely guarded the recipe. But New York City's Serendipity 3 restaurant finally gave in and shared their recipe for this beloved concoction.
The taste of frozen hot chocolate is something that really cannot be explained, it has to be experienced. It isn't like a chocolate shake or any type of ice cream treat, it is in a class of it's own. But it is definitely a treat to try and too share!
Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe
As I said before, frozen hot chocolate is very easy to make. All you need are a few simple ingredients and a blender.
Ingredients:
1/2 ounce of chocolate - it can be any kind you like or a variety. We used part of a Hershey bar and some chocolate chips
2 teaspoons of commercial hot cocoa mix - just the type you buy at the grocery store will do
1 1/2 Tablespoons white granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
3 cups ice
Whipped cream and chocolate shavings for garnish
Making Frozen Hot Chocolate:
Break your chocolate up into small pieces and melt. You can melt the chocolate either using a double boiler, putting it in the microwave or improvising a double boiler by putting the chocolate in a glass bowl or measuring cup and putting the bowl in a shallow pan of simmering water. Stir the chocolate occasionally until it is melted. Then stir in the hot chocolate mix and the sugar and stir until everything is mixed well and completely melted. Remove from the heat and slowly stir in 1/2 cup of the milk until the mixture is smooth. Allow to cool to room temperature. It will set up slightly but that is what you want so don't worry about the chocolate hardening.
Now put the rest of the milk, the cooled chocolate mix and the ice in a blender. Blend on high speed until it is smooth and has a consistency similar to a frozen beverage like a slushy. Pour into fancy glasses and add whipped cream and the chocolate shavings for a delicious treat.
This recipe will give you 2 very generous servings or 3 adequate servings. Truthfully, it is rich so three servings is what I make out of it. You will be amazed at the delicious and unique taste of frozen hot chocolate. Since it is so easy to make it may become my go to treat!
